Thunder ( Will Morgan )

When the thunder, brings the rain
When the thunder, brings the rain
I’m outside your window, oh let me in

I got water and god on my side
I got water, sweet water, and the lord on my side
Lord know’s I’ve been praying, but I have not been satisfied

Play
Thunder

When the thunder, brings the rain
When your thunder, brings the rain
Open your window, I will ease your pain

I got water and god on my side
I got water and god on my side
Lord know’s I’ve been praying, and the lord knows I’ve been dry

Play
Thunder

Lord knows I’ve been praying and the lord knows I been dry

Homage Shared – “Thunder”

The second of eight songs on “Homage” starts with a bluesy 7 chord, no third, all the better to cry for a resolve either minor or major.

Teetering between glad and sad. The intro and groove were inspired by Mississippi Fred McDowell’s song “Levee Camp Blues.”

Mississippi Fred McDowell — “Shake ’em” as he was sometimes called because of his signature song — was a wellspring in the North Mississippi Hill Country tradition. Fred’s thumb provided the pulse for many a dance floor. Levee Camp Blues is a slow deep groove about the troubles of keeping a mule team healthy going against the hard work of building a levee out of the mud.

“Lord I’m a long line skinner, I’ve got the shortest line.. ”

The lyrics for “Thunder” came to Will on a stormy night in Seattle when a years-long, simmering crush moved into a bubbling prayer. No coincidence that Will loves RL Burnside and that Fred brought RL up..

Willie & the Whips perform Thunder live..

Homage’s studio take is available here on this page at least until August 18, click the play button at the top.

Would you believe track was recorded in Stone Gossard’s studio in Fremont? Engineer Floyd Retsima does a great job of weaving guitarist Ari Joshua’s incendiary guitar licks and the occasional whip crack into the mix. Turn it all up.
