Got my mojo working but it, just don’t  work on you
I want to love you so bad baby, don’t know what to do

I’m going down to Louisiana to get me a mojo hand
I’m going down to Louisiana to get me a mojo hand
I’m gonna have all you women right under my command

Got my mojo working ( got my mojo working )
Got my mojo working ( got my mojo working )

Got my mojo working ( got my mojo working )
Got my mojo working, but it just don’t work on you

I got a gypsy woman teaching me advice

I learned a whole lotta tricks gonna keep you girls on ice
Got my mojo working

This series of posts will give a brief history of the songs we chose to cover on our debut album “Homage”, and when
possible video links to our favorite performances of these songs.

Got My Mojo Workin’ (Written by Preston Foster, adapted by Muddy Waters)
Preston Foster wrote this song in 1956. It was first performed and recorded by Ann Cole. The same year, Ann Cole was the opening act for the Muddy Waters band on tour. Muddy Waters streamlined the lyrics, and claimed the song for his own. Facing the threat of lawsuit by Preston Foster, Muddy Waters gave due credit to Preston Foster. This song was made widely popular by Muddy Waters, and is today a part of the popular Blues music canon.

Willie and the Whips chose this as the first song on our album “Homage” because of its upbeat, danceable tempo, and its importance in the Chicago Blues genre.

This is the Muddy Waters Blues Band version, recorded in 1966 and featuring Otis Span on piano, and James Cotton on harmonica.

P.s. A Mojo is an talisman. it usually consisted of a bag hung on a string that was worn around the neck. This bag was colored differently according to what it was intended to attract. Inside the bag were placed magickally charged objects. Having a Mojo was a special thing indeed!
